We congratulate all participants on winning the Sächsischer Transferpreises 2021!

Dresden, July 14, 2021 – Congratulations to Prof. (em.) Dr. Jörg Steinbach, Ms. Dorit Teichmann as transfer mediator, the Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research at HZDR, and the entire ROTOP Radiopharmacy team for winning 1st place in the Transfer category.
The award recognized the successful technology transfer for our joint project on GMP manufacturing of Iodine-123-labeled radiopharmaceuticals for Parkinson’s diagnostics.
Project Goal
The objective of the transfer project was to establish the technological foundation for a production process of the radionuclide Iodine-123 at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR).
The HZDR departments for radiopharmaceutical production and radionuclide theragnostics at the Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research, together with ROTOP Radiopharmacy, developed the technological process for producing the Iodine-123-labeled radiopharmaceutical. A commercial target system for producing Iodine-123 had to be integrated into the TR-FLEX cyclotron system (a facility for radionuclide generation). In addition, a safe production method for Iodine-123 had to be established.
The project also involved developing the radiochemical synthesis process for the radiopharmaceutical [123I]Ioflupan at laboratory scale so that it could serve as the basis for an industrial routine process. Since the regulatory approval of [123I]Ioflupan at the end of 2020, the radionuclide Iodine-123 has been routinely produced as a raw solution under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions at the HZDR cyclotron.
